CORNISH PUBS SCOOP TASTE OF THE WEST AWARDS FOR EXCELLENCE

Some of the county’s finest pubs are celebrating their recent success in the Taste of the West’s revered South West Flavour Awards that recognise dedication and excellence of the highest, customer-pleasing quality.

Established to commemorate the pubs’ superior standards in hospitality and retail, The Halsetown Inn received the rare and coveted Gold Award, while a trio of others – The Turks Head in Penzance, The Queen’s Arms in Breage, and The Coldstreamer Inn in Gulval – all gained Silver Awards.

With judging criteria such as service, meal and food preparation quality alongside ambience, staff knowledge and local/regional produce sourcingit’s no wonder why these top pubs – renowned in the area for their tasty, fresh food and superb customer service – were named as winners in the Dining Pub category.

Promoting only the best of the region’s produce,Taste of the West’s stringent guidelines in identifying the industry’s leaders is testament to each individual pub’s commitment to delivering a distinctive menu packed with local flavour that’s as well sourced as it is a treat for the tastebuds.

Independently assessed by a panel of anonymous, expert judges who looked at every minutiae and more importantly – the pub’s ability to source local, traceable and fresh produce while demonstrating a keen appreciation of its benefit to their business and customers, meant that they were objectively merited for their devoted practices of quality control and excellence.

Taste for yourself the fantastic flavours of award winning food by visiting any of the pubs thatcombated strong competition in order to receive their much-deserved awards.

Set in the stunning countryside surrounds fringing St Ives, the Halsetown Inn is both dog and family-friendly, offering everything from small bites to magnificent mains such as their famous Halsetown burger or hand line caught fish of the day.

Similarly, the characterful Turks Head sits on one of Penzance’s oldest streets, offering al fresco or indoors dining via a mix of delights from Green Thai monkfish curry to vegetable moussaka.

For a true village welcome, the Coldstreamer Inn is the place to be, providing sleek restaurant interiors alongside its traditional pub area. Feast on anything from guinea fowl to salmon and steak – all cooked and seasoned to perfection; and satisfy sweet teeth with a heady dose of hot chocolate fondant or buttermilk panna cotta.

Beamed ceilings and open fireplaces set a spellbinding scene at the Queen’s Arms, where visitors can enjoy an eclectic menu that serves every taste. Fresh fish from Newlyn, organicCornish vegetables and meat from a local butcher all feature on their mouth-watering menu.

All boasting a unique setting and distinctive atmosphere, these menus serve an inspired mix of meals flanked by first-rate service, friendly staff and fabulous surrounds, hosting regular entertainment and events where customer satisfaction is core and their stellar reputation now looks set to soar even higher.

The Old Plough Shortlanesend, Truro

Charity Harvest Festival Auction for Ellie's Haven
Old Plough - Shortlanesend
Saturday 13th October 2012

Brian and Sharon who also run Truro’s City Inn and Jo and Matt the managers
at the Old Plough are hosting a Charity Harvest Festival Auction on the 13th
October to raise funds for children's charity Ellie's Haven.

Ellie's Haven is a charity that plans to offer free of charge holidays
to families with children who have long term or life limiting illnesses.
To achieve this they are buying a property in South East Cornwall to
convert into a holiday haven which cater from up to 2 families at a
time.  Funds raised from the Harvest Auction will help towards the
opening target for 2013.

The Harvest event starts at 2pm on Saturday 13th October and during
the afternoon there will be a fete with lots of stalls, bouncy castle,
face painting and children's games.  The evening entertainment includes
the Harvest auction with a hogs roast, live music and dancing.

Brian and Sharon who took over the pub earlier in the summer are
delighted with developments they have made at the Old Plough.  The pub's
new look was carefully designed to update the interior to ensure it has
a modern feel but without losing its core sense of community and cosy
atmosphere.   With local chef, Matt heading up the kitchen, there
is plenty of home-made premium pub classics on offer from Sunday carvery
served 12-5, to a great daily menu to suit all appetites, there is also
a very popular Friday night take away or eat in fish and chips offer and
Saturday night grill.
