ROCK THE BOX NEEDS YOU

The organisers of a hugely popular charity music event are looking for local bands, businesses, Cornish breweries and stallholders to join in this year’s activities.

‘Rock the Box’ is big and better this year it’s being held over the whole weekend starting on the evening of Friday 31st August  in the beautiful Cornish village of Mithian .

The event, which takes place in a field behind the Miners Arms,  It is a mixture of live music, local stalls, real ales and tasty food from the barbecue all in aid of raising much needed money for Shelter Box. This year we are including a beer festival and we are looking for donations of cask ale from Cornish breweries with all monies made from the ales going to the charity.

Shelter box is a Cornish-based charity which provides emergency shelter and lifesaving supplies for families around the world who are affected by disasters at the time when they need it the most.

This will be the event’s third year. It was started by Anouska House and Ceinwyn Morgans in August 2010, when they raised more than £5000 for the charity.

“Due to its success and popularity, we decided to make this an annual event,” said Anouska.

“We have everything from an outside bar and barbecue, stalls provided by local businesses, raffles with fantastic prizes, entertainment for children and not to mention live bands all day long.

“It is a fun family friendly day that is open to everyone. With your support we hope to make this event even bigger and better than last year’s,” she added.

The Miners Arms is a traditional pub, serving real food and ale in old world comfort. During ‘Rock the Box’ the pub will be open all day serving a full menu between 12-2.30pm and 6-9pm booking is advisable, all dishes are freshly prepared and cooked to order, using the very best of local Cornish produce.

Organisers would like to hear from anybody that would like to donate prizes, set up a stall during the day or any bands that would like to play.

Please contact Anouska House on 07885263470 or phone the Miners Arms on 01872 552375.

The pub’s new look has been carefully designed to update the Old Plough to ensure it has a modern feel but without losing its core sense of community and cosy atmosphere.  With Matt Squire heading up the kitchen, there is plenty of home-made premium pub classics on offer from Sunday carvery to a great daily menu to suit all appetites featuring steak burgers and beer battered haddock.

NOW OPEN – NEW LOOK AND NEW NAME FOR GWEEK PUB

Receiving a magnificent make over as well as complete overhaul on all fronts, the former Gweek Inn has had some VIP treatment to transform it into one of the top destination pubs in Cornwall.

Reverting to its former name, the Black Swan, new landlords Andrew and Beverley Hay are keen to infuse some fresh life and energy into the village pub and raise quality standards to match their other award-winning popular pub – the White Hart in Ludgvan.

With an array of exciting plans in place to help the business grow, the enterprising couple have instigated a quiz and 2-for-1 fish and chips on a Wednesday night, which has already proved a great success - this will start again in September – booking required.

In addition, they are busy orchestrating an Ale, Cider and Mussel festival for the Autumn, which will be followed by various themed food nights throughout the winter, to ensure there is always a great reason to return.

Currently under refurbishment, the Black Swan accommodation will provide a great pub to stay for a short break with its stunning scenery as it sits on the edge of the Helford River next to the Seal Sanctuary. The work includes 4 new en-suite letting rooms and a self-contained let in the barn, which will provide ambient, contemporary accommodation this, will all be ready from the end of July.

Beverley and Andrew are aiming to create an inviting, traditional pub that houses great real ales and serves local food cooked to a supremely high standard. Boasting a courtyard area, beer garden and large car park, guests can eat in the bar area or separate dining area – which can also be hired for private functions.

Renowned for their own successful drinks brand, Gireau – Beverley and Andrew have supplied the US markets as well as sponsoring a string of parties for the fashion elite and VIP’s at the recent Edinburgh Fringe, and more recently sponsoring the student surf tour, and Ludgvan cricket club who play in division one and five in Cornwall’s cricket leagues. As well as a premium vodka, gin and Scotch whisky, cognacs, and a superb herbal liquor called’ Loaded Plus’ the range also includes Pirate’s Potion – an original local-brewed Cornish scrumpy, and two real ales named after their rather infamous resident dog, Hamish, and Hamish Gold, so you will definitely find something different and unique to try!

Dedicated to customer service, they have recently scooped the coveted Cask Marque Quality Service Award at the White Hart, and will be applying the same commitment to renovating and running the Black Swan.

Beverley says: “We are thrilled to be involved in this exciting new project to re-forge a sense of community while providing a quality, destination pub that offers fantastic facilities, food and drink at a wonderful location in Cornwall.”
