Miners Arms Rock the Box Needs You!

The organisers of a hugely popular charity music event are looking for local bands, businesses and stallholders to join in this year’s activities.

The Miners Arms at Mithian near St Agnes
‘Rock the Box’ is being held on Saturday, September 3rd in the beautiful Cornish village of Mithian .

The event, which takes place in a field behind the Miners Arms, runs from midday until midnight. It is a mixture of live music, local stalls, real ales and tasty food from the barbecue all in aid of raising much needed money for Shelter Box.

Shelter box is a Cornish-based charity which provides emergency shelter and lifesaving supplies for families around the world who are affected by disasters at the time when they need it the most.

Live Music at Rock the Box
This will be the event’s second year. It was started by Anouska House and Ceinwyn Morgans in August 2010, when they raised more than £3000 for the charity.

“Due to its success and popularity, we decided to make this an annual event,” said Anouska.

“We have everything from an outside bar and barbecue, stalls provided by local businesses, raffles with fantastic prizes, entertainment for children and not to mention live bands all day long.

“It is a fun family friendly day that is open to everyone. With local support we hope to make this event even bigger and better than last year’s,” she added.

The Miners Arms is a traditional pub, serving real food and ale in old world comfort. During ‘Rock the Box’ the pub will be open all day serving a full menu between 12-2.30pm and 6-9pm booking is advisable, all dishes are freshly prepared and cooked to order, using the very best of local Cornish produce.

Organisers would like to hear from anybody that would like to donate prizes, set up a stall during the day or any bands that would like to play. Please contact Anouska House on 07885263470 or phone the Miners Arms on 01872 552375.

The Pheasant Inn Carvery is now better than ever

The Pheasant Inn, St Newlyn East
WHY choose between a Sunday Roast and enjoying the Summer Sunshine when at The Pheasant Inn you can have both.

Over JULY and AUGUST you won't have to miss you Sunday Roast if your enjoying the sunshine all you need to do is head over to us and enjoy you Roast after 6pm.

We offer a choice of three meats and fresh vegetables every Sunday along side a wide range of chilled wines, real ales and soft drinks also new for the summer we have pitchers of Cocktails.

The carvery
This is What the Cornish Guardian said about our Carvery....

There are places where a carvery is an excuse to cut down on numbers of waiting staff by letting you carry your own plate, places operated more along the lines of cafeterias than restaurants. Not so here.

We were immediately welcomed and shown to our table. Without delay, the waitress offered us a drink and then rattled off the menu for the day and explained the three sizes of meal available – small (£6.95), medium (£7.95) and large (£8.95). We were offered a jug of iced tap water – and they were notching up the Come Dine With Me points before we'd even seen the food.

It was at this point we bowled them our first googly by revealing that one of us was a vegetarian and asking what was available.

We should, perhaps, have mentioned when booking as a carvery has such carnivorous connotations. But no matter, it was deftly handled and, after due consultation with the chef, we were offered a fresh ratatouille to eat with the many and varied veg of the day – more on those later.

The rest of us were offered a choice of lamb, beef or chicken. We decided and were offered another choice – we could either go up to help ourselves or, if we would prefer, they would bring our meals to the table for us. Now that's what I call a carvery, one that's not an excuse for ditching the waitresses ..

Coaches Welcome!

Cornwall Pub Trail has put together a ‘coaches welcome’ guide on its new website detailing dozens of pubs within easy reach of the main holiday routes, major visitor attractions and holiday destinations.

The website allows group organisers to search for pubs that offer a warm welcome to groups, en-route to tourist attractions in Cornwall.

Lisa Smart from the Pub Trail said: “Pubs are a great place to stop for coaches and groups. We’ve identified a huge range of hostelries all of which welcome pre-booked groups, with parking and are either en route, or close to some the region’s most popular visitors attractions and holiday destinations.

“The pubs offer good value food, often with special menus for groups and a friendly, welcoming atmosphere which not only helps to break up a long journey but actually adds to the overall experience.”

Here's two of the pubs which welcome coaches but link to the website and click on the 'coach' symbol to find more...
The Maltsters at Chapel Amble

Maltsters Arms, Chapel Amble - This characterful 300-year-old pub and restaurant  is in the beautiful village of Chapel Amble which is five minutes from Wadebridge and close to both Padstow and Rock.

The Rock Inn
Rock Inn, Roche -  Situated in the small village of Roche, between the North and South Coasts of Cornwall this friendly pub is on the main road from Padstow to St Austell and close to the Eden Project.

New Landlords for Caradon Inn

Steve and Carla at The Caradon

A popular pub next to one of Cornwall’s most popular outdoor theatres has been taken over by new landlords.

The Caradon Inn is situated on the edge of Bodmin Moor on the main road between the market towns of Liskeard and Launceston, directly opposite the Sterts Amphitheatre.

Sterts runs a highly popular summer season of performances in its covered amphitheatre, with Winter and Spring entertainment taking place in the studio.

As well as attracting theatregoers, the new landlords are also looking forward to welcoming local people to a good community pub with traditional values, great freshly cooked food and well-kept real ales.

Caradon - great place to sit in the sunshine
Steve and Carla Kirkham have recently returned from Spain where they had been living for 6 years but had been missing the family and the weather!  Prior to moving to Spain, Steve ran the Chip Shop Inn just 16 miles away, so the Caradon Inn was a great opportunity to return to the area.

The Kirkhams are really keen to ensure the pub is family friendly and are offering child sized portions from the main menu.  The enclosed pub garden which catches the daytime sunshine has large board games.

The pub serves a selection of real ales including Sharp’s Doom Bar, Sharp’s Own and a range of lagers, ciders, wines and soft drinks.

The menu is full of traditional pub favourites and it’s all freshly made at the pub and cooked to order at great value prices with dishes such as farmhouse sausages and creamy mash potato with onion gravy and a selection of seasonal vegetables, homemade steak and Doom Bar pie and rump steak with all the trimmings.

Freshly made desserts are always on offer including specials such as crumble and cake of the day or a treacle tart. Sunday Lunch is served between 12-4pm – perfect after a walk on the moor.

Pre-theatre dinner is also available before the show from a special menu with 2 courses at £10 and 3 courses £12.50 with a valid Sterts ticket.

Dream comes true as holiday makers take over Cornish Pub!

Ian and Linsey at the Three Tuns

A couple who have been holidaying in Cornwall for the past 20 years have had their dream come true by becoming the landlords of one of their favourite pubs.

Ian and Linsey Mason, who are originally from the Midlands, have just taken charge of the newly-refurbished Three Tuns Hotel in St. Keverne near Helston following a £70,000 programme of improvements to the popular village inn.

Ian, who has been visiting the region for three decades & his wife, Linsey were married in the local church in September 2010, and had always had the dream of moving to the area permanently.

"We would like to thank the local businesses and our regulars for their support and help in making our dreams become a reality"

"Our chef is producing many specials which are seasonal to compliment the main menu, including locally caught fresh fish.  We will also be taking advantage of the villages award winning butchers to make sure our menu is something more than just pub grub" added Ian.

The Three Tuns Hotel, which officially re-opened last week, has undergone a major refurbishment programme both inside and out but ensuring the full character is kept.

All the B&B rooms are now double en-suite or larger, and have great views over the square or over the churchyard with the sea in the distance.

Located right next to the church in the main village square, the Three Tuns Hotel is at the heart of the local community. It's a traditional village local with character and the advantage of having five ensuite
letting rooms. Large garden area to the rear and patio to the front.
